Bentley / Mr Barrington} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} E.1/HP.7.3.34. Phantom 2 and 20/25 Sealed Petrol Filler Air Vent. Referring to memo. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Bwg.{J. C. Bowring}8/KW.6.3.34, Drawing No. F.86074 shews the modifications we have found it necessary to make to prevent escape of petrol from the vent when cornering, when the extended vent pipe is replaced by a small protected ventilator, the latter scheme being required for body work in which the petrol filler is not enclosed. We think the same modifications and tests also apply when the extended vent pipe is used, although no doubt the tendency for petrol to escape would be less, due to the greater height to which it would have to climb to get through the vent. These modifications as shewn on F.86074 can be carried out on the existing pieces in production, but to avoid having to do this extra work for all time we are putting in hand a scheme suitable as a permanent modification which should be tested and standardised in due course.
