S/W E.P. Sp{Mr Spinney}3/EBN21.7.24 40/50 HP. Chassis. SPARE WHEEL CARRIER. I am forwarding your memo EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}5/H18.7.24 to C. re fitting Barkers' latest design of spare wheel carrier on a trials car. With reference to the 20 h.p. side wheel carrier, with which you are experimenting for application to 40/50 h.p. cars, I think this is a somewhat unsatisfactory carrier i.e. (1) It swivels on the top bracket. I think this point has been corrected by fitting a key, although we have no new ones yet and have to peg these brackets on many cars to prevent the wheel swinging round and damaging the paint on the wing. (2) The bolts clamping the bracket on to the frame come loose. For instance GA-45, the bolts originally fitted by R-R came out, and the bracket was tied on to the car with string when it came into Barkers. Barkers fitted new bolts as tightly as they were able to do so - these all came loose, and on another visit to Barker's Works these were tightened up again; and the last time the car came in they were as loose as ever and some of them were missing again. In all, this car has had three separate lots of bolts fitted. I heard of a case the other day where a driver stated that he found it was best to keep the bolts loose as it was hopeless to attempt to tighten them up. I handed this information to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} at W.W. recently. My opinion is that the 20 h.p. side wheel bracket is not good, and it will not be satisfactory unless an extra stay is applied, such as for instance a stay from the upper part of the bracket to the aluminium dash. In this connection Daimler appear to have had a lot of trouble with their wheel brackets, and have stayed them up in all sorts of different ways. Nearly all Daimler cars which have come in recently have had a new kind of side wheel bracket. Sp.{Mr Spinney} | ||
