Failure of a Goshawk steering box and proposed design modifications.

GOSHAWK STEERING BOX. X.4264. I am now quite convinced that the steering box which broke on one of the early Goshawks was abominably badly fitted - it was utter carelessness to clamp it on to a tube which was too large for the bore. I think it is therefore quite permissible to allow the production castings to be made in first class aluminium bronze, as die castings. The chief fault in connection with this part is the stresses set up by the movement of the frame affecting the fixing of the support tube. Drawings of a modified design have already been sent through which should give quite a different result. We have now also decided to make a longitudinal tube which can lengthen by compression a set-up spring a half an inch, and therefore reduce the strain transmitted to the steering gear to a known amount not exceeding 200 lbs.
