RR. 'F' M.S. & S. ENGINES. X2431

Referring to Lp{Mr Lappin}3/AV/D2. 3.29. With regard to the relative merits of the M.S. and S. engines for installation in 'Night Bomber' aircraft, I have discussed this matter with Rg.{Mr Rowledge} and would advise as follows :-

(a) The M.S. engine is preferable for taking off and climbing at the lower altitudes. At the operational height, the B.HP. will be less than the S. engine and on this account the reliability may be considered relatively greater.

(b) If the aircraft designers are satisfied that the B.HP. available for taking off, taking into account the <strikethrough>xxxt</strikethrough> extra weight of fuel carried, we are of the opinion that the F.S. engine can be run successfully for periods of 10 hrs. at the operational heights.

As requested we enclose blue prints of curves shewing the fuel consumptions under throttled conditions at various r.p.m. for the moderate F.{Mr Friese} and 10,000 ft. S/C. engines.

In answer to enquiries from Vickers and Handley-Page, we have forwarded copies of curves to <strikethrough>these</strikethrough> <strikethrough>xxxxxxxx</strikethrough> firms.

Lr.{Mr Ellor}
