Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} WOF. from Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} K8430 Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}1/T17.5.26. "New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I" Steering. With reference to the recently introduced modification of a radius to the top pivot bush. This modification is of dual advantage in that - (1) It permits oil to flow more freely on the bearing surface of the bush, and - (2) Overcomes the trouble which we experienced on a number of Chassis in the Department of the sharp edge of this cup cutting into the bronze bush, and causing quite an audible squeak, and we feel to a certain extent tended to stiffen the steering. In view of the fact that the new type steering which is now being fitted, has a tendency to "stickiness" under certain conditions, which "stickiness" will probably be increased by any undue friction in the axle, I think we should consider the advisability of carrying out the above modification to any chassis which we have in our hands, that are fitted with the new type steering. This will, of course, entail a considerable amount of work, as there are approximately 45 Chassis built on which this modification has not been fitted.
