RE. FAILURE OF THERMOMETER FIXING INTO ENGINE TOP WATER PIPE.

On the cars we are now turning out, the design of this job calls for two union connections, which design has since been considered unsatisfactory and is now being replaced by an improved design of a single union connection. This new design is now in hand, but not yet fitted to cars coming on test. Now that these cars are getting into the hands of Coachbuilders, we are having trouble with thermometers pipes being broken in the fixing or the dismantling of this thermometer.

The thermometer is fixed in position, and in case it is required to be dismantled, the union nut when unscrewing also twists the thermometer bulb and consequently breaks the connecting tube.

We have already issued instructions with reference to care being taken in handling this job. I should be glad to receive from you definite instructions as regards dealing with the matter :-

1) What are we to do re. replacing those which have broken?
The only suggestion I can make on this matter is that they will have to be replaced and the faulty ones returned to the makers to be again made up and re-calibrated, and put into our stock. - who pays? RDB.

2) Is it possible on these old design type to fix any special arrangement so that the pipe can be held whilst unscrewing the union nut?

3) Is it considered advisable that thecars fitted with this design of thermometer fixing should be modified?

I am sending you a sample of one which has broken, which please return, so that I can have it replaced.
