R.R. F.X. - CAMSHAFT DRIVE & HAND TURNING GEAR.

We are in receipt of your L/M27. 11. 26.

We are sending you herewith prints of E.27889 and E.27258, so that you can see exactly what we have.

We think you will agree that this is the correct arrangement. A small alteration has just been made to this scheme, to break the surface of the inner sliding tube by a recess with holes drilled in the bottom. This remedy was adopted on the Falcon lll and overcame the same difficulty, by making a break in the oil film and stopping pumping action. We think you will find that the drive is the right way round with the sliding piece at the top. We agree there should be a hole behind the plunger so that it can be pushed out should the plunger stick, but we think the plunger has a definite tendency to push the coupling over to one side. Could we have a double plunger so that it is balanced? We think most of our difficulty occurs, not through lack of area on the driving surface, but due to the piece getting out of line and fidgeting on the surfaces. The hand starter is arranged to push the worm wheel in the solid direction of its mounting.
