R.R. (W.A. DEPT.) N.C. Ser. 10-0-M-D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} 1916. R14/W9916. September 1916. 9th. EXTRACT FROM RE CHASSIS NO7-CA. X138 BEVEL GEARS. I noticed on several occasions when running very slowly that the bevel gear period was very manifest on this particular back axle. It spoils the beautiful smoothness that one expects from our chassis. It appears difficult to see how it can be entirely eliminated, as a gear which appears to be entirely free from this period may not be silent at other speeds. Again 49-GB seems superior, although not an entirely quiet axle, it has improved. It suggest that to be entirely safe from this difficulty a helical bevel should be worked upon, and our first move should be to more carefully criticise the Gleason helical bevel, or make a further attempt to return to a finer pitch, as the period is much less with a finer pitch and at a still slower speed, and if the speed of the period could be reduced it would be less frequently within the running speed. This is a point which deserves special attention. | ||
