X4027 Ha/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}/A/MA. 24.11.32. PEREGRINE PROPELLER SHAFT. On the 3rd. Peregrine chassis we have fitted a 2 1/2" diameter propeller shaft. This particular shaft was very good for balance and shows no sign of whirling up to 80 M.P.H. We recommend that this size should be used in preference to the 3 1/2" diameter shaft. We are shortly obtaining a dynamic balancing machine for these shafts and recommend that the unbalance be corrected as shown in the accompanying sketch. This obviates the necessity of using correction factors after determining the unbalance couple as the metal is removed as near the supports of the machine as possible. Further, for a given unbalance least material has to be removed. Again we think that the sliding joint should have a master spline so that the shaft will remain in balance after disassembly, it being impossible to assemble it incorrectly.
