RE PHANTOM REAR WHEEL CARRIER. X8600

We wish Derby to make some experiments to find the best method of preventing the wheel climbing up the plate. We are inclined to believe that much of the trouble has come about through two causes, and possibly three.
(1) The washer was not bedding on the plate. Fig. 1.
(2) The plate was not parallel to the plane of the hub. Fig. 2.
(3) The upward heel for the plate was inadequate. Fig. 3.

FIG 1. FIG 2. FIG 3.

HANDWRITTEN: THESE WERE SENT THUS ON 7EX

We send herewith N.Sch.2419. shewing a scheme giving a tube of 50 per cent increase in torsional rigidity, with a more sure fixing for the plate, and we wish you to compare this with.
(1) The original scheme N.Sch.2269.
(2) The proposal suggested on N.Sch.2401.
(3) Same as (2) but the fixing for N.Sch. 2419 on the lower tube.

We estimate that the comparative rigidities are
N.Sch2419. : (1) : (2) : (3) as 1 : .666 : .634 : .666

We would also like a report on each scheme from the point of view of wheel creep.
It is appreciated that we only intend to fit the wheel carrier free of charge, but Mr Royce has said that if necessary we must fit also the top tube. Our calculations all go to shew that the amount added to the stiffness by calling in this tube is very small and the extra weight could be more profitably utilised in increasing the diameter of the lower tube. It is this point we would like to be assured of by experiment.
