PHANTOM 2. WIDER BRAKE DRUMS WITH STEEL SHOES.
We send herewith N.Sch.3618 shewing the wider brake drums on the front axle on the above car. These are made possible by the use of two spoke wheels, and we have taken the opportunity to absorb some of the room on the hub which was formerly used by the extra row of spokes.
When this drawing was sent you for printing in an unfinished state it shewed solid forged steel shoes, but R.{Sir Henry Royce} considers that these tend to get heavy, and prefers to try sheet metal shoes, constructed somewhat on the lines shewn.
The exact method by which they are welded up can probably be best determined by a little experience.
We believe that the brake drums are now cast solid with their flanges. We do not intend to interfere with this if it is the best way of making them.
