X4027a We have carried out some camshaft tests on Peregrine because the slow running obtained with E.100863, the camshaft that gave the best power, was not good enough. The original programme was to try three camshafts (1) E.100863 with the overlap reduced from 13o to 9o - i.e. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}970. (2) A camshaft similar to the existing 20/25 having the inlet to LeC.3436, the exhaust to E.100861 giving the timing :- [Diagram showing valve timing for HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}969] [T.D.C at top, with markers at 6 and 4] [IN (Inlet) at bottom right, marked .020 and 35] [EX (Exhaust) at bottom left, marked 38] (3) A very short duration camshaft having inlet and exhaust cams to LeC.3436 - i.e. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}968 It was anticipated that this would give exceptional low speed power at a sacrifice of top speed. Owing to the policy of suspending work on Peregrine for the time being, so far only Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}970 and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}968 have been tested. The results are shown on curves Rn.{Mr Robinson}Pr.39/40/41. The interesting point is that the short duration camshaft does not give the low speed M.E.P. we hoped for; the reduced overlap long duration shaft, however, is better than anticipated and, with the late timing, gives reasonable low speed pulling without loss of top power, in spite of the inlet closing as late as 44o A.T.C. We anticipate that Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}970 will probably be the ultimate Peregrine camshaft. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} | ||
