The Origin of the Ohmmeter and Generator Testing Set
Present day requirements

It was in the year 1889 that Mr. Evershed, the pioneer of modern methods of insulation testing, introduced his Insulation Testing Set, in which for the first time an ohmmeter was used in conjunction with a hand generator to test insulation under pressure.

The combined ohmmeter and generator also originated with Mr. Evershed, who in 1903 produced the "one-box" instrument which is known throughout the world as the "Megger" Testing Set, and which still remains unique and indispensable for important work.

With the ever widening use of electricity there has, however, arisen a need for an instrument which, while not perhaps presenting all the advantages combined in a Megger Testing Set, performs all insulation tests efficiently at reasonably high pressure, and is so cheap that a contractor can largely multiply his testing facilities at reasonable cost. The instrument must combine with these advantages a reduction of weight which facilitates its being carried to the most distant and inaccessible job.
