PHANTOM II WATER COOLING SYSTEM.

Several tests have been carried out to determine the effect of temperature and of restriction in the system, on the Phantom II Water Cooling System.

The tests were carried out on Chassis 19-EX which is fitted with a radiator having 5½ - 7 m/m matrix tubes.
The radiator was not new, but has done a considerable mileage on the car.

The water flow through the top water pipe was measured for the standard system at two different bottom water pipe temperatures viz: 85ºC and 60ºC.

The same tests were carried out but using two different types of restriction in the system; in one case a restricted delivery nozzle having two much smaller slots than the standard was used, the slots being .625" x .250"; in the second case a blank drilled with a hole .600" diameter was fitted in the joint between the water pump and the pipe to the cylinder blocks. The effect on flow was substantially the same in either case, the second method is preferable as it eliminates the somewhat large pressure put on the rubbery connections and joints when a restricted radiator nozzle is used.

The result of the water flow tests indicates :-

(a) A reduction in flow in every case with temp. rise.
(b) That slight cavitation takes place in the standard
