RE VALVE LIFTER.

Thank you for your memo with reference to the cylindrical contact on the valve lifter. I am very much surprised to find that an error of .010" in the narrow width of this lifter is found in practice to actually occur. We ought to examine the various parts and find out where the errors have arisen. They certainly ought not to take place in the valve guides, and it shows that something is wrong with the schemes adopted in manufacture at some stage such as the reaming. It would appear that the errors already existing were increased rather than corrected. It may require a reaming jig, which I will scheme if there is not one already used. I quite agree, however, that as the parts are so rigid there is little chance of this cylindrical contact bearing right across. I think it would improve it if we curve the surface of the lifter to a large radius, i.e. like a barrel. This we can do in a machining operation fairly easily.
