Phantom III Rockers.
--------------------

Please receive herewith:-

LeC.5441 showing the rockers and tappets with the hydraulic operation deleted.

It will be noted that the pedestal studs must be moved .1", but it may be found that there is sufficient metal in the cylinder head to accommodate this position. Failing this, elongated bosses should be provided in the casting.

Without hydraulic tappets we may be able to have a less ideal of oil distribution to the rocker shafts. At the moment we have a central cluster of oil pipes underneath the carburetter which are inaccessible. If we can get rid of some of these pipes it will be a saving over and above the simplification to the valve operation.

On the first engine we are prepared to try this scheme with end feeds only to the rocker shafts. The head however should be made with the standard arrangement of oil passages which should be plugged, and if this scheme proves a disappointment we can revert to the original.

A design for the oil pipes will be issued tomorrow.

LeC.5441 herewith.
