32-EX. PHANTOM III

Cooling System.

Replying to your memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.2/AP.15.7.37 and further to our memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/IMW{Ivan M. Waller - Head of Chateauroux}/7/JAB.7.7.37, we have now completed our investigations on the two water thermometers fitted. We have interchanged the bulbs, as we found that the standard capillary is quite long enough to reach the front of "A" side cylinder head.

The error of the thermometers is less at 100°c than at 70°c, but we are giving you mean differences. The figures obtained being as follows :-

1) The standard thermometer reads 4°c high.

2) The special thermometer reads 1°c low.

3) With the standard thermometer at the rear of "B" head and the special thermometer at the front of "A" head, the mean recorded difference on the road is, rear of "B" 6°c hotter than front of "A".

4) With the special thermometer at the rear of "B" head and the standard thermometer at the front of "A" head, the mean recorded difference on the road is, rear of "B" 2°c cooler than front of "A".

When analysed these figures show that the true difference is that the front of "A" side cylinder head is 1°c cooler than the rear of "B" side cylinder head.

We do not therefore consider that a change in the position of the thermometer is of any advantage.

In our Daily Reports we will in future give the true temperature at the rear of "B" side head, the standard position.

The new fan pulley is to hand and will be fitted at the earliest opportunity if we can get the old one off without the special tool.
