TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} C. to BJ. WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} (Struck through) SECRET ORIGINAL R4/M29.11.26. 10-EX. and CHASSIS GENERALLY FOR SOUTH OF FRANCE. X8774 X8992 I suggest we try running this with one spare wheel, and sufficient spare tubes and a cover on a long journey. I hope to arrive at Toulon (Grand Hotel) on the morning (say noon) of Dec. 15. Dodd can call here for a load on his way to Folkestone. I thought of asking Mr. Lovesey if he would go also, to help me with the drawing, problems, letters, etc. but fear you cannot spare him: I will decide later (after Xmas.) * I hope to see you here again before we go. We can then discuss all the points we propose working upon while I am away, such as - (Handwritten note on left: * NEARLY COMPLETE) (1) Phantom - more power & lighter. } Better induction (2) 20HP. - more power, same weight. } system. (3) * Front axle control - probable. (4) Parallel front axle. - possible. (5) * Simplified sequence starter. (6) * Better bonnet fasteners & lock. (7) Substitute for autovac - (a) Vacuum pump on engine (tested & found hopeful.) (b) Induction vacuum drives petrol pump, has wiper fitted into service tank, so that pump is submerged and requires no gland: cannot therefore leak petrol. (Diagram annotations for (b)) - Vacuum from induction. - Control float stops or slows down pump. - Addnecessary valves. - This lets into induc-tion a small amount of air slowly when full. (c) Mechanically driven pump from engine by slow geared eccentric, working petrol pump located by reciprocating pull rod in service tank, as in (b). - (Diagram annotations for (c)) - Engine. - Slow running eccentric on end of camshaft. - Control float. Cut out pump by holding up delivery valve. - Petrol pump. (b) & (c) or Royce novelties might have provisional patents. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
