To: Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GB. 1110 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GB.1/RH.{R. Hollingworth}24.5.41. VISIT TO BORG & BECK ON 21.5.41. The object of this visit was to become acquainted with the reply from the Long Co., to our complaint concerning pedal lift with increase in engine speed on the 10" C.F. clutch. A copy of the letter from the Long Manufacturing Division is attached. In paragraph "A" they describe tests in which they measured the cover plate deflection caused by the pressure plate springs. We have not made any tests like this, as it does not directly affect clutch pedal lift. In paragraph "B" are described tests covering the additional cover plate deflection caused by centrifugal loading. Their cover deflections are only .2 of ours. This requires explanation. The covers in their tests and ours should be the same, since Borg & Beck buy theirs from the Long Co. The Long Company's test set up differs from ours in a manner which could reduce the deflections which they measured. If the adapter plate to which they bolted the clutch cover were not sufficiently thick, loading the levers would cause it to bulge upwards and reduce the deflection measured on the cover plate. (See their drawing). The flywheel to which we bolted our cover plate was very smooth so that slip between cover and flywheel may have occurred and so increased deflection. Possibly extreme tightening of the cover plate attaching bolts or the judicious application of a little grinding paste would reduce our deflections. It is proposed to try this. Concerning the Long Company's notes on page 2 of their note, about paragraph "E". Borg & Beck said that they could make up sample clutches as made for Cadillac for the past year at a reasonable price and without much trouble. We are to let them know if we require samples. The measurements of Lever Throwout given in paragraph "D" cannot be considered satisfactory. The throwout -Continued- | ||
