In order to get some definite information in regard to steel, I consider that we should run as many engines as we can which are going to do the 10,000 miles trial, with valves made in Firths Silchrome Steel. If it should happen that if and when the American made Silchrome Steel for the 20 HP and 40/50 HP. also becomes available, I suggest that the valves I have obtained should be made up of half of each of these types. In fitting the valves, they should be fitted to alternate cylinders, and not to every one of the three forward on one side, and every one of three rear on the other side. By doing this, all the conditions which are likely to accrue in the engine should be spaced over both types of valves. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} | ||
