Noisy Windscreen Wipers.

With reference to LE6/C/25.1.35 asking for a suitable lubricant for windscreen wiper drive.

Where there are one or more bends necessary in the main flex, the tendency is for the drive to whirl and foul the outer casing. This in turn causes the clicking noises experienced.

On 5-B-IV we have tried filling the flex with Russian tallow, in the hope that it would act as a steady and also not be so liable to be churned up and escape down the drive.

While the drive now feels to be running more smoothly and there is less noise, we cannot say how long this will last. We would suggest Mr. Evans trying this and giving his opinion.

To fill the flex we removed the retaining washer, pulled out the drive from the outer casing a couple of inches and immersed the whole in a tin of hot tallow. After all the air had escaped it was allowed to cool off before refitting the drive correctly.

Re Mr. Evans' remarks that the rubber covering they tried on the outer casing of the drive is not worth much, we agree, except in a case where the drive has not been carefully fitted, because this sets up a secondary noise in the particular object fouled by the drive, and a rubber insulation is of value.
