Hallam - Head Repairs}/JP Dear Sirs, We have pleasure in informing you that we have opened a new Laboratory at Warlingham (Surrey) where, in addition to the usual facilities for the analysis and valuation of lubricating oils and motor spirits, we have now installed one of the new C.F.R type variable compression engines. As you will probably be aware, some time ago it was decided by the various scientific bodies in different countries to adopt an international standard engine and a method of procedure for the determination of antiknock values. After a considerable amount of research, this resulted in the general adoption of the Horning, or Co-operative Fuel Research engine. The results obtained from this engine are on such a basis that they are comparable with the results obtained in any other country, and are the internationally accepted figures. The design of the engine is such that extreme accuracy and regular concordance can be obtained, and the engine gives one an authentic and accurate means of measuring the detonating tendency of motor spirit samples. Results are expressed in terms of octane numbers, and the method of standardisation is by direct matching with mixtures of pure normal heptane and 2.2.4. iso-octane. Samples required for test should be preferably one gallon but in case of necessity we can work on a quart sample. The price for carrying out the test is £5 per sample, and we are generally able to give results on the day following receipt of the sample. Yours faithfully, HAROLD MOORE (sgd) ENCLOSURE N°386 | ||
