miles, the pipe breaking between the centre and rear ports. It is apparent that we cannot obtain an exhaust manifold that will give consistent results. We have not since the Silver Ghost type of manifold had one to stand up to the job. These failures are consistent in customer's hands and have been on all our 10,000 miles tests. We also get the bolts stretching which holds the manifold to the cylinder. We can after each run take a spanner and tighten up all the nuts. The expansion and contraction of the manifold as previously reported had caused the C & A washers to crumple up apart from the the previous report of the port holes not being of a large enough dia. in the washers. These have since been rectified.

EXHAUST FITTINGS to LOPT E.55794, N.S.3162, to SUIT REVISED POSITION OF CROSSMEMBER N.S.3162.

Until the failure of the manifold occurred, we had been free from exhaust blows. The sliding joint gave no further trouble after cutting off .625 off the down pipe as it was butting on to the end of the pipe welded in the sliding joint. It was also too tight a fit. It is imperative that this space be allowed between the two pipes as the pipe goes inwards towards the fastened pipe. It does not come outwards. The lagging of the silencer with the aluminium sheet is a very poor job. At the end of 6,000 miles it had torn and crept endways overlapping the silencer at either end for approx. 1,500. The lagging had again crept at the finish of the test. The overlapping joint should be at the side so that any dirt could fall away from it instead of opening it out as it does with the present design. The silencer stays, swan neck, and snout gave no trouble. It should be possible to do away with any bends in the silencer pipes as these always give trouble. This should be borne in mind for the new 25HP.

The improved drive has been quite satisfactory. We have not heard any chattering or gear rattles. The fabric drive has not deteriorated. There has been a slight weep of oil from the drive. The design has been altered so that fine timing of the magneto can be obtained. A slight rattle developed in the serrated coupling.

OIL PUMP to LOP. E.53658.

The oil pump has been efficient and free from noise throughout the test. we have had no failure of oil pressure
