_4_ gear oil on the way up to Paris, but got no better results, therefore we dismantled the cross steering tube and found the ball pads heavily marked. The steering was perfectly free for the first part of the run, and then gradually stiffened up. This has occured on almost every run. We have made a recess in the bottom of the pads .250" wide and approx. .0132" deep to act as a reservoir for oil. This has made a decided improvement, but not as yet good enough. We do not believe that the reservoir now fitted to the axle is sufficient with the use of thinner oil. The oil leak is still bad from the o/s of rear axle. We have fitted a breather to the filler cap with no improvement. We will verify the other tests as soon as possible. G.W.H. G W Hancock | ||
