PETROL GAUGE.

We believe the gauge as at present fitted is not always satisfactory. The issue has been mentioned separately to R.{Sir Henry Royce} Sales, and Cy and we suggest that the following improvements might be tried. To some extent it appears that the RR. Hobson gauge as developed specially for our car is in some ways inferior to the standard instrument as fitted by R.R.A.I. and on many cheap English cars.

(1) We suggest that a gauge be tried with the original long back leg with reduced dia. at the base to minimise the risk of spilling over into the balance pipe. We presume that the copper rods in the leg are to produce the effect of a reduced dia.

(2) A smaller back leg dia. might be tried. This would have the effect of reducing the length of the scale which we think could be made about two thirds of its present length, and is possible now that we are proposing to re-introduce the 3 gl.{G. Linnett} reserve in the main tank, and so do not need the same accuracy of reading. Also the Octroi (Paris) has been abolished.

(3) We suggest the top of the gauge glass might have a bell into which the liquid could spill, and out of which the balance pipe could be taken near the top.

(4) To overcome the difficulty of the angle of the instrument board affecting the reading we suggest that the width of the 'U' tube from back to front be reduced to the absolute minimum. There is no need for the central aluminium web behind the gauge glass.

(5) We suggest that it is essential that the instruments should be connected up at Derby and not disconnected by the coachbuilders, therefore the body of the instrument must be capable of entering its frame from the back of the board. This we provided for in the case of the gauge included in our framed instrument patch. The standard instrument as now fitted has this feature, but the suggestion as submitted by yourself would appear to demand that the instrument be
