MODIFIED STEERING NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I
.940 WORM WITH 1500lbs S.S.TUBE SPRING.

9-S/S

Following the report of PN.{Mr Northey} after test of 99-SC which had been modified to the above type of steering and further reports from 'H' on the matter, a test was carried out by RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} and OWB on Saturday, July 31st.

The car tested was 99-LC and after running this under various conditions of road and traffic the matter was fully discussed, and the view was reached that the symptoms which were adversely commented upon at the test of 99-SC were probably due to a slight deficiency in the set-up of the SS{S. Smith} springs, and that it was probable that this particular car could, with advantage, be fitted with some washer or other means of slightly increasing the present initial compression.

Will Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} please decide the best means of carrying this out and provide the necessary material and instructions for fitting so that these can be despatched abroad, following the car. These should be addressed to Whr.{Mr Wheeler}

As regards the particular car tested on Saturday - 99-LC - which may be regarded as a fair sample of the modified steering as we have found it on those converted in London recently, RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} considered that it was a fair specimen of the results which it was expected to obtain with this form of steering.

OWB agreed that the general compromise was a reasonable one and that whilst shocks were exceedingly slight, the control in traffic was sufficiently accurate, although a greater sense of directness in the control would be desirable if such a car were being mainly used under traffic conditions.
