1938.

Dear Robotham,

Many thanks for your letter of the 1st April. I was glad to receive the print of your experimental tail bearing, and we are looking into the possibility of trying a similar arrangement ourselves.

We promised to give you some information on the cost per pound of cylinder head and cylinder block castings. For the quantities in which you were interested, our own 25H blocks and heads would cost us about 5d per lb, neglecting all tool charges and assuming Foundry plus Machine Shop scrap not more than 10%. The difference in cost per lb between O.H.V. and S.V. blocks, and between blocks and cylinder heads, is not sufficient to be of any importance for an estimate of this sort.

These figures do not include any equipment such as patterns, core boxes, molding boxes, core dryers, etc. To give you an idea of the size of Foundry necessary to get down to these figures, our melting capacity is 250 tons per week. I imagine such Firms as Messrs. Sterling Metals would have approximately the same capacity.

With regard to the possibility of making a set of gears for you, I suggest that before we go any further into this, you get your gear experts to meet our Mr. Harriman. He will be able to give you a much better idea of what can be done than I can.

Yours sincerely,

[Handwritten note:]
On approx same basis RR is 9d per lb + SCRAP ALLOWANCE
