1290 Sg. {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} from Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. By. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. RHC. {R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} c. Da. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. Mx. {John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} STARTING TROUBLES ON THE P.III. It is clear that a feature which is contributory to starting troubles on the P.III is the tendency to stop the engine when the clutch is engaged, and to a lesser extent, the trouble experienced sometimes on re-starting on a gradient. With a view to tackling this end of the job in parallel with the work on the starter motor itself, we have carried out some experiments increasing the idling speed, and reducing the tendency of the carburetter to flood, a report of which is attached. As it will be at least 2/3 months before the next P.III car is ready, we recommend that this modification is at once fitted to Trials cars, and any Company P.III cars available, and if no adverse opinions are received within a month, that the modification should be produced forthwith, and be made available retrospectively in cases where customers have had starting trouble. Mx. {John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} has been co-operating with the Experimental Dept. in developing this modification, and he is in agreement with the recommendations contained in this memo.
