X4863 KELVIN BOTTOMLEY & BAIRD LTD. KBB GLASGOW & LONDON LORD KELVIN'S High Tension Electrostatic Voltmeters THESE instruments are made in two different forms, capable of measuring voltages from 500 to 100,000 volts directly without the aid of potential transformers. The readings can be thoroughly relied on when used under any conditions, since they are unaffected by temperature, wave form, power factor, or frequency. They are particularly adapted for pressure testing of cables, and the number of ranges obtainable on any one instrument makes them very suitable as laboratory instruments. The two forms made are— (a) Vertical Electrostatic Voltmeters. (b) Electrostatic Volt Balances. Vertical Electrostatic Voltmeter, No. 1130. Vertical Electrostatic Voltmeters essentially consist of two vertical metal plates, fitted in parallel planes, and forming two cells. Into these cells a movable vane supported on knife edges is attracted. A pointer is fitted on one end of the movable vane, and a support is provided at the other end, on which different weights are placed, and thus three distinct ranges are obtained on each instrument, depending upon the number of weights used. The dielectric spacings provided in the Vertical Instruments are such that they may be safely used for direct current voltages up to the maximum scale reading. For alternating voltages of wave form approximating to a sine curve the maximum safe voltages are as follows:— Instrument No. 1128, 5,000 volts; No. 1129, 7,500 volts; and No. 1130, about 14,000 volts. Each instrument is supplied complete with wood case for portable use. KELVIN BOTTOMLEY & BAIRD, LTD., 18 CAMBRIDGE STREET, GLASGOW. Kelvingrove Works, Hither Green, LONDON, S.E.13. Pamphlet No. 10.
