-3- 9. Bentley Over-drive gear boxes. RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} will investigate the latest date on which he must receive instructions to introduce the over-drive gear boxes on the 101st chassis in "" Series. He will have this information ready for the chassis conference on 17th January. He will also look into the question of introducing the modified camshaft at the same time. Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} was requested to give a careful opinion on the merits of the over-drive gear boxes and to consider the question of setting up a revised standard of acceptable gear box noise in the Test Department. It was pointed out that it was unreasonable to expect gear boxes with indirect high gears to be as quiet as the present type. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} will look into the question of loaning a box to Professor Dodds, so as to get a customers opinion of the unit. 10. 6-B-IV. This car is expected to go to France before the end of next week, if there is no recurrence of the previous gear box trouble. Attention was drawn to the fact that apart from the over-drive gear box, this car was fitted with Girling type rear brakes, which might constitute a valuable modification in the event of our producing more Bentley II's. In any case these brakes would give us useful experience for Bentley III. 11. Bentley Main Bearings A discussion arose as to what should be our policy with regard to the 77 chassis fitted with A.C.2 main bearings which are in customers hands. It was decided that By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} should find the chassis numbers concerned and arrange that the customers should be written to to the effect that we should like to receive their cars for inspection at a Depot after 1,500 miles. We will then drop the lower halves and examine the bearings. | ||
