FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} C. to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL STIFFENER FOR PISTON LeC. 2476. Y8040 We send you herewith LeC. 2493. shewing the above. This stiffener should enable you to alter the set of pistons made to LeC. 2476. and cure them of their excessive flexibility and tendency to rattle. We are asking for the stiffeners of this pattern to be in ordinary steel so that they maintain the diameter of the piston when the engine cools down. You may find however that on the Sports Phantom with aluminium blocks and steel liners a stiffener in "Staybrite" steel might be more suitable, as this steel has a co-efficient of expansion we understand of about .000016.
