Messrs. North & Sons, Ltd.,
Whippendell Road,
WATFORD.

Dear Sirs, Sleeveless Magneto.

Further to our EFC7/T. of the 10th inst., we have now had this magneto tried on a chassis by our Test Dept. and the following is their report :-

"We have completed our tests of magneto No.98201. It has not got the heavy sleeve knock, but the make and break is decidedly noisy, there is also a very bad brush squeak. We do not consider this magneto is a great deal better than the standard magneto which we now pass.

In connection with this magneto we should like to point out that it appears to have been hurriedly erected, as the distributor timing is one or two teeth out, and the oil hole cap spring has been trapped between the distributor and the magneto, preventing the two from bedding properly."

With reference to the distributor timing being one or two teeth out, this refers to the timing of the magneto in relation to the engine, as given by the appearance of the number through the window.

We notice that you continue to use a built-up cam ring as distinct from a solid cam ring. It appears that this may possibly have some effect on contact breaker noisiness.

The machine is now being put on one of our experimental cars and after some running we may have a further performance report to make.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
