To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EH. c. to BJ. " " E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} " " Ey. X.3175. X.2565. - AFTER THE WAR CHASSIS. X.682 X.3175 7CA. car has been running for the last two years with the friction clutch in the chain wheel on the gear box bolted up solid. Now we are using a single press button switch, we see no reason for having the clutch. The clutch gave us a lot of trouble on 7CA., the backing plate for the springs is not strong enough. We recommended a solid chain wheel to be used. We had a case the other day which showed up the necessity of protecting the terminals on the actuating switch. A syringe was being used to get some oil out of the clutch. In working the syring, the terminals on the actuating switch, were earthed, this started the motor which jammed the syring so that it could not be got out. We had to disconnect the battery before we could get it out. This is an operation which is likely to be done on any car, so that we ought to gaurd against it. VALVE MECHANISM. X.2937E. We are now fitting 7CA. with the latest camshaft, lifters and tappets. The camshaft is the one got out by the D.O. from Mr. Elliott's instructions. The lift on the cams will be .487". When Mr. Elliott was here last week he said there was another camshaft to be designed. In the meantime we shall fit 7CA. with the camshaft we have ready. The cams are separate to the camshaft.
