126.3 S/W To Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Copy to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re Petrol Pumps. P.III. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}18/F5.5.37 Referring to our conversation yesterday relative to 34-EX, which on the Nairobi trip had the pump somewhere below the floorboards, I assume this was the special pump because we know the standard one won't deliver the fuel from that position. I find on enquiry that Symons covered a total distance of 12,482 miles on this car under of course the most strenuous conditions of use and we know that he had no petrol pump trouble whatsoever. One wonders - therefore, whether this was not a very good test and as good as any 10,000 mile test of ours, and what more - if any - testing is needed before we can go in for a pump of this type coupled with a single pump on the dash- board which would get the car along if the other ones did fail. I do not want anything in this memo. to stop what we have already decided to do because I do not want to defer any longer the day of getting three pumps but I should like the matter ventilated next week at the Chassis meeting.
