X.664. CAPACITY OF ACCUMULATORS.

Owing to the late point at which the dynamo on our chassis cuts in, and the small extent to which it is capable of charging the battery at the lower chassis speeds such as are mostly met with in town, it becomes increasingly important that the capacity of our lighting and starting battery shall be as great as consistent with the space taken up; the weight, under the circumstances, being almost a negligible factor.

At present, our battery has a capacity of 55 ampere-hours and in town during the Winter the fact that there is an auto-generator on board hardly cuts any ice at all. In other words, one might just as well runnin and about London without a dynamo being on the chassis at all, the necessity for charging the battery independently is considerable. It should follow that the smaller the capacity of the battery the more inconvenience will the Owner suffer from having to charge it more frequently independently. I understand that there is a proposal in connection with Mr. Royce's latest design for placing the battery within the chassis frame to reduce the capacity below that which it is at present.

I strongly urge this should not be done, for
