340. To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/DL. c. to E/Psn. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/DL.16/AP.16.12.36. PHANTOM III. WATER HEATEDD HOT-SPOT BOX. Tests have been carried out at the request of E/Psn., to determine whether one of the two water inlet pipes to the hot spot box E.88029 can be dispensed with. Temperatures were taken with thermocouples at four places, two on either side of the box, engine run part throttle at 1500 R.P.M., and an engine water outlet temperature of 87°C. With a double water feed to the box (standard system) the temperatures were very consistent at all four places, being 64°, 65° at the front and 65° and 66° at the rear of the box. With any one pipe disconnected, the temperature drops about 18° on that side of the box to 48° and 46°. The test was repeated with the engine at tick over speed, 72° was recorded with a double feed, and 45° on one side when that pipe was disconnected.
