RE FAN BELTS. X.3438 X3979 X.3566. X.876 With reference to your memo. Srnl/G25320., we have carried out tests on a sample of one type of American Whittle Belt. This belt was a combination of leather and fibre links. We found that the fibre was unsatisfactory material to have in a fan belt. If the belt is over-tightened at all, the fibre breaks; it will not stretch like the leather. We recommend that any belts you contemplate using should either be of tanned leather like the English Whittle Belts or else a combination of tan leather and raw hide. We also recommend any type of Whittle Belt to have a large number of small links. Thisis necessary in the case of the dynamo as we have proved a Whittle belt with long links causes a vibration to the mounting of the dynamo which re-acts on to the undershield and causes an objectionable noise.
