ROY{Sir Henry Royce}/GEA. 6/EB. OUR REF. GR{George Ratcliffe}/CF. Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd. DERBY. RECEIVED 21 SEP 31 16th September 1931. Ho/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Please say Roy{Sir Henry Royce}/EH 21/9/31 Dear Sirs, With further reference to your favour of the 5th. ult. and the Solex Carburettor sent to you on approval, we beg to enquire if you have had an opportunity of carrying out tests, and if the results meet with your approval. We shall be only too pleased to send our Chief Engineer, Mr. L. Mantell, to assist with the tests if you will permit us to do so. Dealing with carburation generally, we beg to inform you that we have been testing for the past two years with a Self Starting 'Solex' Carburettor. In this type we have designed a special Auxiliary Starting Carburettor which is fitted to the main carburettor, thus eliminating the usual strangler. The results we have obtained on over 50 makes of cars during the past two years, prove that the design is quite successful, and a number of cars will be fitted with this new type of carburettor as standard during the 1932 season. You will of course appreciate that it is fairly easy to start an engine during the warm weather, and in order to test our design out under winter conditions, we have had six cars operating above the snow line in the Alps and we also put in a cold room so that our experiments could be carried out under winter conditions. CUSTOMER'S CARS ARE ONLY DRIVEN BY OUR STAFF AT OWNERS' RISK. | ||
