re. Knocks in the Engine, apparently emanating from the Pistons.
(known as "No.5. Cylinder Knock".)

With reference to the above and memo from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} reference Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/LG12.3.26, upon which BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} has made a pencil note, at Thn's request, that cylinders with extra thickness on the trunks are being standardised and that it will be in order to despatch chassis meantime with this fitted.

I should like to point out that we are having quite a considerable amount of trouble with chassis on test with the knocks in question, and I am afraid that for some little time it will not be possible to obtain cylinders with the extra thickness on the trunks in sufficient quantities to enable us to cure all cases which are considered sufficiently bad to be not passable.

I am proposing, therefore, until such time as a sufficient number of cylinders are available to cure all cases, only actually to hold up cars which are going abroad, and to allow other cars to be despatched to Coachbuilders, although not considered passable, on the understanding that new cylinders with the extra thickness on the trunks shall be fitted later at the Coachbuilders, if the final complete car test still shows this to be necessary.

I do not want it to be assumed from this memo that a very large percentage require to be changed, but on the other hand, from our experience on the past few days, there may be quite a number. It is only on the objectionable cases I propose to act as above.

I trust, therefore, that the manufacture of the cylinders with the extra thickness on the trunks will be pushed forward with all speed.

EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}
