Y82440 To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} CLG124 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG12.1.27. With reference to the attached. Originally, the second spring was fitted to the exhaust cutout in order to prevent the controls rattling. Experience in the Test Dept. has shewn that it does not do this. They therefore now adjust the controls so that the spring in the toggle mechanism holds the cutout valve shut. If the controls are adjusted in this way, then there is no xxxx reason why the second spring cannot be left off. We recommend that this is done. It has been realised for some time that the controls for the exhaust cutout were not satisfactory. In June last year we received a new design from WW. which was arranged to work with one spring only. This design has been standardised and will no doubt soon be fitted to cars. In the meantime we see no reason whatever why the spring on the rear silencer should not be left off altogether.
