X8050 To RG.{Mr Rowledge} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to EY. c. to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/VH. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/LGIO. 8.26. X3866 We received a telephone message from R.{Sir Henry Royce} this morning stating that he wished liners to be tried threaded right up to the top at the earliest possible moment. He did not agree with under-cutting the liners at the top. This is the condition in which they have up to the present been run. We understand that a cylinder block fitted with the new type of liners to R's requirements will be available early next week. With reference to inducing the exhaust valves to stand up to the endurance test, R.{Sir Henry Royce} suggested increasing the length of the valve guide towards the valve head. We could not quite make out the object of increasing the valve guide length. R.{Sir Henry Royce} also said something about shrouding the valves; increasing the length of the valve guide would seem only to increase the chance of heat conductivity on the head. WW. are anxious to know the exact gain in power from (1) Larger valves (2) New camshaft (3) Induction system recently used. We understand that these tests are in progress. R.{Sir Henry Royce} desires the Works to urge the Phantom alum. cyl. block and head and seemed to think there had been unnecessary delay somewhere when he heard that no castings were yet available.
