Mr. [Strikethrough] C. SG. {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} [Strikethrough] C. HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} [Strikethrough] C. RM. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} A282 BY.10/C.5.4.38. FUELS FOR CARS. RE: USE OF DISCOL. I attach herewith my copy of Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 7R.30.3.38. from which you will note that we are in the position to recommend 'Discol' as an alternative to Ethyl leaded fuels. There were a number of indirect factors, which hindered us from coming to this decision earlier, notably the pump diaphragms and possible effect of alcohol on cylinder wear and jointing materials, but these have now been covered by running cars on alcohol, notably the customer referred to in Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 's memo. Lp. {Mr Lappin} has run considerable distances, and I have run my Bentley some 15,000 miles on 'Discol' only without encountering any disability whilst at the same time I have covered 22,000 miles without decarbonizing solely due to the use of 'Discol'. We should prepare an insert which should be pasted into the instruction books for our various cars, but there is no need to take retrospective action as the information can be passed on by our Depots.
