x766. To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} c. to Wo R.{Sir Henry Royce} filing Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} 2/MJ. 24.7.29. x7250. x766. S.S. RADIATOR TUBES. -------------------- In view of the trouble that has arisen with F.2 B. series onwards, with radiators becoming choked in service, we have been testing some S.S. radiator tubes which have a gap of .059 between the tubes instead of the original .038. These tubes on test give a freer flow of water through the radiator matrix. The S.S. will definately be worse than F.2 B series unless we use these tubes. From our experience we should say that they will not affect the cooling capacity of the radiator appreciably. We shall of course fit a radiator so made to the S.S. car running in France to prove the point. However, inview of the present trouble we recommend that all further S.S. radiators should be built up with tubes to E.79321 and that similar tubes 4.25" long for the Phantom radiator to arrangement E.77644 should be fitted to all matrix supplied to the Repair Dept., for replacement. We find considerable variation in the hydraulic restriction of radiators produced to the same drawing, and recommend that a careful test should be instituted on production to ensure that variations in manufacture are kept within the minimum practical limits.
