X168 The revolving test tackle is now in working order and we have broken one pivot on it. The results of this one test however are not reliable as we did a certain amount of experimenting to find the most suitable load. The face plate which carries the pivot and has a long boss on its face to which the pivot is fixed by means of a large bolt in place of the usual pivot pin is not satisfactory, as the metal is not strong enough to carry the load. The end of the boss wears away rather rapidly as there is movement at this point owing to the U section of the pivot twisting each time the load is reversed. The large bolt which holds the pivot in position is also not good enough, as this seized up and twisted off. The face plate is a steel casting and I am now arranging for a forged one to be made, and also to use the standard pivot pin instead of the bolt. We shall also fit a lubricator in the end of the pins to lubricate the friction surfaces. The front cross member flanges are at present being | ||
