Mr. E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives,
Rolls-Royce, Ltd.,
Derby, England.

Dear Hives:

Many thanks for yours of July 19th Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 1/LG19.7.26 on Shock Absorbers.

This report seems the most able and clear description of the various types of shock absorbers that we have ever seen. It will be particularly essential in distinguishing between the supplementary spring type and the true damping type, the one being exactly what we do not want and the other being what we do want in some form.

It is very difficult to prevent devices on the lines of the Hassler from being inflicted on us for "experimental work".

Yours very truly,

Maurice Olley
