Oy9-E-22426 -2- Feb. 24, 1928 3. Front Brakes. I attach 5 photos of the front end of the Phantom taken last week-end on a run to Boston and back. There was a temporary "sun-thaw" which made pools of water in the snow although the air was below freezing. You can see the effect on the front brake gear. The front brakes froze off luckily instead of freezing on, so it was possible to operate the car by exercising care, to avoid skidding the rear wheels. One front brake at one time froze off while the other operated, which gave a swerving effect which did not appear to be serious however. When both front brakes are frozen off the "jaggering" of the servo when the pedal is operated is very pronounced, although we have put friction in the swinging link of the equalizer. The front brakes freeze on every night when the car stands in an unheated garage, but so far we have always been able to break the ice without skidding the wheels. I think that by centralized chassis lubrication it will be possible to prevent the ice forming in the bearings of the front brake operating gear by giving them a shot of oil every 25 miles or so.
