The inlet valve duration appears from these figures to be rather less than it should be and the next time the engine is built up we shall check it over.

VIBRATIONS.
The engine ran exceptionally smoothly at all speeds on the bed and appeared to be much better than Japan 1. The half torsional period was not noticeable on the bed, due in a large measure to the flexible mounting at the front. The half torsional period on Japan 1 when fixed solidly to the bed was distinctly noticeable.

LEAKS.
The engine was remarkably free from oil and water leaks, the only leaks noticeable being minor things such as one core plug on cylinder head leaked water very slightly. The only oil leak which also was very slight, was from the front crankcase cover, and this only occurred towards the end of the power curve when the oil was really hot and the engine running at high speed.

IGNITION.
The ignition distributor used, was standard single contact breaker type as the double contact breaker type was not completed. No trouble was experienced with the distributor.

The engine has been stripped down after the run and all the parts are in perfect condition.

The work that is being done is to stop up the ventilation holes in the flywheel and to improve the oil pump.

The critical point on this engine is whether we can get the engine gears quiet before they go on to the engine so that once the engine is built up they give no trouble. Unless we can do this of course, it is a very, very, difficult job.

When the engine goes back on the bed the next time we shall be able to carry out some serious endurance running and investigation as we are now satisfied that all the features on the engine are performing satisfactorily.
