R.R. 199 (250T) (SD676 19-7-17) MP180865 X4247 BY8-P18.11.21. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}/for Dn. c. Rg.{Mr Rowledge} RECEIVED FC 18 NOV 1921 GOSHAWK 11. GEARBOX. SPECIAL ROLLER BEARINGS. X4247 Two sets of the following bearings have arrived today and are being handed to you by Mr Dolman. Two special roller bearings to take the place of number 135 ball bearing. Four special roller bearings to take the place of number 330 ball bearing. These bearings are to be used in the two central positions of the box and at the rear end of the Second Motion Shaft. The ball bearings on the First Motion Shaft and on the thrust end of the Second Motion Shaft take considerable thrust and therefore will have to be retained. There is a fairly high slotting action on the Universal Joint which falls endways upon the number 340 ball bearing on the end of the Third Motion Shaft. We have therefore retained this as a ball. In addition to the foregoing for Goshawk, we have two complete sets (6 bearings in all) of R.335, which Mr Rowledge intends to try in place of the similar ball bearings at present in use in the Planet Wheel. No doubt Rg.{Mr Rowledge} will give you definite instructions as to what he proposes to do in the way of testing with the bearings in question, but as expressed to me his purpose was to try them in the Epicyclic Gear which he is running at high speeds for the purpose of testing out the value of the bearings against the centrifugal action.
