~~R/Y~~ FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} ~~Copy to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}~~ Copy to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} PHANTOM 2. REAR SPRINGS ORIGINAL X7410. Herewith we send N. sch. 2998. on which we have shewn the rear spring with a rolled eye at one end, with the object of cheapening the production. We have investigated the question of keeping the spring in its present position and shortening the shackle, but this produces a very high angle of inclination of the shackle. We therefore suggest that an aluminium packing plate should be used between the spring and the pad, using the existing shackle. This has the advantage that a little more clearance is given for the subframe which appears to be desirable. An alternative method is to put camber in the spring, but this does not give any assistance with the subframe clearance. With reference to the spring clips R.{Sir Henry Royce} does not agree to using the conventional stirrup type as these clips do not make sufficient provision for the rebound. We should like some information as to where the cost of the present clips comes in. We see that they are finally adjusted to the thickness of the spring by means of shims. R.{Sir Henry Royce} does not agree to the use of these shims and thinks that it would be better to select the length of clip. On N. scheme 2998. we have shewn a suggestion for making an exact fit of the clip by means of selection or by a simple milling operation. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
