Private & Confidential.

Dear Mr. Robotham,

I was very pleased indeed to be able to come along and chat over with you the possibility of manufacturing the Piston on Friday morning, and I afterwards had a further conversation with Mr. Wilson and also Mr. Hives.

I take it that the following is the position: you are agreeable, and we are prepared, to try and put this job on the market as a commercial proposition, the details with regard to royalties and so on and so forth all to be settled after we have had the opportunity of getting some experimental sets tried out, and also looking into the question of patents. It was also agreed that you should send us along full particulars, drawings, sample piston, and drawings showing the relative clearances between the sides of the lozenge-shaped projection and the cylinder head, and all the other information with regard to such clearances, compression height and so on as may be useful to our Mr. Blackith when he has a chat with Messrs. Walford & Hardman Brown, the Patent Agents, and discusses with them as to whether the patents you have already taken out will need any amplification, or whether they can suggest any improvements with regard to same.

I think it is recognised by all of us that in taking out patents, one is sure to come up against the fact that something or another of some sort has been done before, and it may be necessary to qualify exactly what it is you propose to do in your patent specification. Any suggestions that Hardman Brown may make with regard to this, of course to be put up to you, and both of us to act in collaboration so as to get the patent position as clear and sound as possible before the complete is taken out.
